“DISCOURAGED”…
We are discouraged because every time it seems like things are going to turn around with our child . . . the other shoe drops. We find ourselves heading into another drastic drop on the roller coaster of emotions. Each time they seem to be moving in a better direction or toward reconciliation with us we get our hopes up. Then, when it doesn’t happen we are crushed. We become afraid to trust that this time things will be different or that they will ever change. We have already been let down so many times that discouragement has set in and become one of our most prevalent emotions.
I love the words in Deuteronomy 31:8 that say, “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.” What a beautiful reminder of God’s faithfulness. He is with us. He has gone before us. No matter what our children are doing, God will never leave us, and he will never forsake us. Oh, how we need that lifegiving promise from the One who can and will relieve us from our discouragement.
As we contemplate what it would look like for us to be free of our negative emotions we can read the words from Joshua 1:9 that say, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
That’s the answer! We can be strong and courageous, and we don’t have to be discouraged because He is with us! He is the answer to our negative emotions. We must take our focus off our child and put it on the Lord who is the only one who can give us the comfort and peace we are seeking.
