Do You Trust Me?

“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:15-17 NIV
In this Bible passage, Peter is having an early morning conversation with the Risen Jesus. During this conversation, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loved Him. The conversation is about the reinstatement of Peter and varying degrees of love. My intent is not to minimize or change the importance of what is happening in these scriptures at all. I just want to add a different perspective to this exchange. With that said, I have often thought about these scriptures and replaced the word love with trust.
It is like the Lord is asking me if I trust Him and my response is, “Yes of course I trust You”. Then He asks again, “Do you really trust me?” and my response again is, “Yes of course I trust You”. He asks a third time, “Do you really really trust me?” and my answer is, “You know that I trust You.” And He says … “Then let go of the outcomes and let Me work”.
The question then falls on you. Do you trust Him? Do you really trust Him? If so, then what is He asking of you at this moment. Give it some careful thought and pray about it. Let Him guide you into obedient surrender.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
Father, Thank You for intimately knowing us. You know our hearts, our hopes and dreams, and our heartbreaks. You see our silent tears and our quiet rejoicing. Help us to honor You by trusting You more and more each day. In Jesus’ precious name we pray, Amen.
